Please note that until 2020, Prep-ELE providers could obtain yearly recognition from QQI ACELS to run this course. All trainees received ACELS certificates on completion. From 2021 onwards, QQI ACELS has ceased renewing providers’ recognition and certifying trainees for this course. Providers can still offer the Prep-ELE course and self-certify trainees on course completion. The information below is valid for all Prep-ELE courses that were offered up until December 2020.

This is a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Secondary Level Students (awarded to State Qualified Teachers)

In order to gain recognition course providers were required to comply with the minimum Key Standards and Guidelines (Certificate for the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language to Secondary Level Students (State Qualified Teachers): )

One section of the recognised Preparatory Certificate requires the teacher to do her/his Supervised Teaching Component (STC) in their first post in his/her ACELS recognised school or Irish Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science state school. Please note that the STC is required before the teacher can be fully certified for working in the recognised Junior ELTL sector in Ireland, and that it needs to be done within a maximum of 3 years of completing the first part of the course with the recognised course provider. The STC involves one observed lesson overseen by a supervisor (often the Director of Studies or school teacher trainer). Please find the and the of the STC here available for downloading. If a course participant or school requires more information on this component, please contact the course provider or ACELS directly.
